饼的家常A security source said that missiles fired from a US Predator drone targeted a Haqqani compound yesterday near Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan. The Haqqanis have been based in that tribal area since they fought to expel the Soviets from Afghanistan in the 1980s. Mohammad Haqqani, the son of the veteran Afghan guerrilla commander Jalaluddin Haqqani is believed to have been killed in the drone strike. The Haqqani faction which has links to al-Qaeda does not launch attacks in Pakistan but sends fighters over the border into Afghanistan. Another son, Sirajuddin, is a higher-profile target and is described by US forces as one of their biggest enemies in Afghanistan. He has a bounty of five million dollars on his head. In his weekly address, Mr. Obama appeals for a consensus. "I ask members of both parties to seek common ground in an effort to solve a problem that's been with us for generations. It's in that spirit that I've sought out and supported Republican ideas on reform from the very beginning." President Obama plans to hold a bipartisan meeting on Thursday.
燕麦葡萄甜Former Secretary of State Alexander Haig, who also served as White House Chief of Staff during the Nixon administration, has died. Haig was surrounded by family when he passed away this morning in Baltimore. He suffered from a staph infection acquired before entering a hospital. NPR's Allison Keyes has more.
饼的家常The four-star general served as a top adviser to three presidents, and he himself mounted a campaign for the nation's top office but dropped out of the race in 1988. In 1973, Haig helped then President Nixon prepare his defense as the Water Gates scandal blossomed, and he was widely credited with persuading Mr. Nixon to become the first US president to resign. Haig also served the Ford administration and was President Reagan's secretary of state, but he never lived down his response to the 1981 assassination attempt on Mr. Reagan. "As of now, I am in control here, in the White House, pending return of the vice president and in close touch with him. If something came up, I would check with him, of course." Haig is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patricia, three children, eight grandchildren. He was 85 years old. Prosecutors said he sold 52 million dollars of Qwest stock all the while knowing the company was in big trouble. Qwest has since recovered, though its share price has remained in the low single digits. Nacchio is expected to appeal to the Supreme Court. He faces six years in prison and more than 70 million dollars in fines and forfeited gains. Jeff Brady, NPR News.

饼的家常At least nine people were killed today when a Turkish Airlines jet crashed into a muddy field while landing at Amsterdam's main airport. Officials say the Boeing 737-800 was en route from Istanbul and it broke into three pieces after hitting the ground just short of the runway. Among those killed in the crash were the plane's two pilots and an apprentice pilot. Investigators have found the plane's data recorders and begin trying to figure out what went wrong. At least 50 others were injured in the crash. The plane which was reportedly carrying a total of 135 people was relatively new.燕麦葡萄甜An international tribunal has convicted three former rebel commanders in Sierra Leone of multiple war crimes for their role in the 11-year-old civil conflict in the West African nation.
